Description
Providing interest in the garden in all four seasons, ‘Bud’s Yellow’ is a Yellowtwig Dogwood variety adored for its colorful stems, pretty flowers, abundant berries, and fall foliage color. Perhaps the most outstanding feature are the bright yellow winter stems that stand out especially nice against a dark background or snowy backdrop. In late spring, flat-topped clusters of tiny creamy white flowers the butterflies and beneficial pollinators will appreciate are atop the tips of stems. Clusters of pearl-like white berries the birds will enjoy follow the flowers. The stems on this upright rounded shrub are 6 to 8 feet tall and clothed with broadly elliptic medium to dark green leaves throughout the warm season that turn to attractive golden yellow shades during the fall. A wonderful ornamental addition to any landscape, in sun or part shade.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, Bud’s Yellow Twig Dogwood is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or hedges in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. Also nice as an accent plant in home foundation plantings. Because it tolerates a consistently moist soil it is perfect for those areas where the soil just doesn’t want to dry out. That said, it won’t tolerate standing water. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, bird and wildlife gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 5 to 6 feet apart for hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Bud’s Yellow Twig Dogwood is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to consistently moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Tolerates wet soil but not standing water. Appreciates some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon in hot and humid climates. Very low maintenance when left alone and we’ve seen no serious insect or disease problems.
Â
Although pruning is not necessary, many folks choose to remove about 25 percent of the oldest stems in late winter or early spring of each year to encourage growth of new stems which will display the brightest red color the next winter season. Alternatively, every 2 to 3 years all stems can be cut back to 8 inches above the ground for total renewal.
