Description

Noted for its superior cold hardiness to USDA Zone 6a, ‘Edith Bogue’ is a magnificent evergreen Southern Magnolia cultivar that northerners can enjoy! As with her cousins, she features extremely large cup-shaped white flowers up to 12 inches across that will fill a front or backyard with heavenly lemony aroma. All grown up, Edith Bogue can grow from 40 to 60 feet tall and half as wide over time, so leave her some room to grow.

The original seedling of this tree was purchased way back in 1917 from a nursery in Florida by Edith Bogue of Montclair, New Jersey. It has stood the test of time ever since as one of if not the cold hardiest of the evergreen Magnolia grandiflora cultivars.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright pyramidal form 40 to 60 feet in height and 20 to 30 feet wide, the Edith Bogue Magnolia is ideal for use as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in tall privacy screen plantings. Also useful to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, and cut flower and cottage gardens.

Spacing: 15 feet apart for privacy screens; 35 feet or more apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Edith Bogue Magnolia is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average or better fertility, preferring one that is rich in organic matter. Grows well in full sun or part shade. At least 4 hours of direct sunlight or all-day filtered sun is suggested.

I previously purchased an Edith Bogue magnolia tree from another online vendor and it died. The replacement process was very difficult and I will never buy from them again. This magnolia is hard to find, but I wanted it for its cold tolerance. So, I gave Wilson Brothers a try. I purchased the tree in the 7-gallon pot and it arrived in good health.
