Description
A brilliant beacon in the shade garden, the Florida Sunshine Anise is guaranteed to brighten the shady to partially shaded areas of your garden with its bright yellow foliage. The evergreen leathery leaves are glossy and elongated ovals, emerging a bright chartreuse and maturing to a mild chartreuse or yellow-green. As the weather cools in the fall, the leaf color brightens to screaming yellow. During the same time, the upper stems take on a brilliant red cast, contrasting vividly with the leaves. In late spring, white flowers are borne from the branches. Each blossom has many tepals (false petals) that dangle downwards. The penny-size fruits ripen from an olive color to brown and have the scent of anise when crushed. They look like tiny pumpkins. The shrub attains an upright rounded shape with open branches, especially in very shady situations and is highly deer resistant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright irregular rounded form 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Florida Sunshine Anise is ideal for use as an accent or specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny or shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Foliage color will be more intense when plants receive at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. A fine addition to woodland or shade gardens, sensory gardens, yellow theme gardens and North American native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 feet apart for solid hedges;Â 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note:Â Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Anise variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Florida Sunshine Anise is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade or filtered sun in the mid-afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. That said, plants can be clipped to control height or to maintain as a hedge.

I stumbled on Wilson Bros.’s web site during a gardening project my husband and I developed to occupy ourselves during the COVID pandemic. I bought a few shrubs to test Wilson Bros., and then bought a few more, and then more than a few more. I have been EXTREMELY impressed with the quality and size of the plants, the quality of the packaging provided to prevent damage during shipping, as well as the prompt shipping times. This particular shrub arrived in great shape–large, well-branched, and well-secured in the box so that no branches were damaged. I am very happy with this purchase and just ordered two more shrubs.——————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
