Description
Steeplebush, Spirea tomentosa, is an easy-to-grow and very pretty but uncommon North American flowering perennial shrub native to wetland areas, which makes it a perfect choice for filling those low-lying areas in the landscape or garden where the soil tends to stay moist to wet. It is admired and enjoyed by gardeners and butterflies and other beneficial pollinators for its showy 8-inch steeple-shaped spires of spirea-like soft and fuzzy looking pink to rose-purple flowers that appear from mid summer into fall. The flower spires form atop upright, slender, wand-like copper-color stems clothed in attractive green leaves that turn to a bright reddish-gold in fall. Excellent for garden beds and large container gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide, the Steeplebush is ideal for use in sunny wet meadows, marshes, fields, lake margins, ditches and other areas where the soil stays consistently moist to wet. In these condition it will spread to form a colony, which considering it’s attractiveness makes it a really good asset in the landscape or gardens where many other plants might drown. Also does very well in large container gardens such as whiskey barrels. A fine addition to bog and wetland gardens, rain gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 2 to 3 feet apart for mass plantings

Growing Preferences
The Steeplebush is easy-to-grow in a consistently moist to boggy soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Light shade is tolerated but plants will flower more with more sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Spent flowers can be deadheaded to encourage extended bloom. We’ve seen no serious pest or disease problems.
