Description
Awarded the 2024 Perennial Plant of the Year by Proven Winners, ‘Storm Cloud’ Bluestar is a superior selection of our North American native species, Amsonia tabernaemontana. In spring, incredibly dark new stems emerge near-black clothed in very dark green leaves with silver veins. The stems stay dark throughout spring. In late spring, a cloud of light periwinkle blue, star-shaped flowers completely cover the foliage reblooming for many weeks afterward. This one has more attractive and dense foliage that remains attractive through summer turning vibrant yellow and golden to orange shades during fall. Its wide and mounding habit to about 30 inches tall and up to 4 feet wide make it an ideal choice for sunny to partially shaded garden and landscape borders where the soil tends to stay moist. A low-maintenance great performer for both northern and southern gardeners, Storm Cloud Bluestar is exceptionally easy to grow thriving in heat and humidity and cold regions where temperatures can go to -30F. You might be happy to know that deer turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 30 inches tall and 36 to 42 inches wide, Storm Cloud Bluestar is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or in groupings in sunny top partially shaded garden, landscape and woodland borders. A fine addition to blue theme gardens, native plant gardens, wild flower gardens, perennial borders, or the periphery of stream of pond.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for groupings; 6 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Storm Cloud Bluestar is very easy to grow in most any consistently moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in full sun to part shade. It prefers a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5 on the pH scale. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering and overall performance. Tough it prefers a consistently moist soil it doesn’t like standing water. This one is more compact so does not require cutting back after flowering, though can be cut back to the ground after going dormant in winter.
