Descriptions
Discovered in Coosa County, AL by plantsman Dr. Ron Miller, ‘Swamp Hobbit’ Florida Anise is a wonderful, very dwarf selection of our native Illicium floridanum that grows to maybe 8 inches tall and a foot or so wide in 5 years, making it a perfect selection for smaller garden spaces. That said, over time it might reach 2 feet tall spreading to 5 feet wide. The large, anise-scented deep green leaves and abundant showy red flowers are the standard size of the species, but the very short internodes are what make it so dwarf. Shade and moisture tolerant, it is perfect for planting in partially to fully shaded gardens beds and woodland settings in consistently moist to wet soils, making it a fine choice aside streams and other bodies of water. You might be happy to know that deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it, and we hear it’s tested cold hardy as far north as Delaware USDA Zone 6.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an spreading habit to 2 feet tall and up to 5 feet wide over time, the Swamp Hobbit Florida Anise is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a low evergreen hedge or groundcover in shady woodland borders. Perfect for planting under large trees in areas with moisture retentive soil. An excellent home foundation plant for under low windows. A fine addition to woodland gardens, red them gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants

I’ve been searching hi&lo for ‘Swamp Hobbit’ Illicium for many years and so I was cautiously surprised to find the offering at Wilson Brothers. This rare plant is showcased at a public garden in Delaware, Mount Cuba. My order arrived quickly, safe and sound, well-packed and in good condition. Prior to my order, I called the nursery and a very helpful representative answered all my questions. I encourage WBG to offer more native plant selections in the future. Thank you!————————————————-We love Natives too, and try to offer as many as we can. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
This illicium is just a cutie! Planted it was in a container that will remain in a shade garden. Hope it does as well as reported. The plant I received is very robust and healthy looking and it planted without any sign of wilting or stress.———————————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! This dwarf variety is very difficult to find, and I was delighted when it appeared in the inventory. Illiciums have been totally ignored by the deer in my woodland garden , but most of them need a lot of space. ‘Swamp Hobbit’ is easy to fit into smaller plantings. The plants that I received were healthy and have settled happily in to my garden. I only wish I had bought more before they went out of stock.—————————————————————————–Put your name on the waiting list and we will contact you when they are back in stock. We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the kind words and great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
