Description
A beautiful sight to behold in the woods or near streams or other bodies of water, and just as its name implies, this Maple tends to vine in a shady environment, where its stems beautifully sprawl through other plants in the vicinity. Well-suited in the shadow of larger trees, it can be grown as a multi-stem large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive single or multi trunk small tree. Tiered branching reminiscent of Japanese Maples hold symmetrically-lobed and delicate soft-green leaves that are tinged in red in spring turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red in the fall. In full sun, which we suggest only for cooler climates, it forms a small tree to 25 to 30 feet in height, and maybe half that height in shade.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its delicate beauty, the Vine Maple is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny or partially shaded environments. That said, in hot climates we advise shade or filtered sun in the afternoon hours. Similar to Japanese Maples, we think it looks best in a partially shaded environment such as along the edges of woodland borders. Very nice around the garden pond. Also a good candidate for espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) or to frame the corners of homes and other structures. Dark colored shrubs and groundcovers plants really help to show off the light green leaves. A fine addition to woodland gardens, Asian theme gardens and water gardens.Â
Suggest Spacing:Â At least 30 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Vine Maple grows best in a moist but well-drained acidic soil rich in organic matter and sun or part shade. In warmer climates we suggest afternoon shade or filtered sun during the hot afternoon hours.Â
